It rains. How can it rain IN MINORCA? Oh, my friend. Spring is fickle. And although the storms on the island are fleeting, springtime plans can quickly change with the weather. However, both the changing weather conditions, and Minorca’s general climate in spring, make this the ideal time for certain activities that would be unthinkable in summer. Here are some ideas.
• If you want to walk along the Cami de Cavalls trail, do it now. As if you were a pilgrim, sling your rucksack over your shoulder and travel around the edge of the island on foot. Or by bike. Or on horseback, as its name suggests. There is a wide variety of companies that offer horse-riding excursions. They have the advantage that, until the peak season officially begins, you are allowed to take the animals right down to the waterside (you are too late for this year, but don’t forget for next year. We promise you that the experience of splashing through the water on horseback is well worth it).
• Take the opportunity to visit the Talaiotic monuments. We have over 1,000, so you are spoilt for choice. Some of them are on public land, whilst others are on private land. For the latter, you will have to pay to enter (thereby helping to maintain the heritage), but they are well worth it due to their good state of conservation. These millennia-old stones are part of the history of Minorca. And they are in the process of being declared Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Not to be missed are: la Naveta des Tudons, Torralba den Salord, Torre den Galmés, Talatí de Dalt and the Cala Morell necropolis.
• Visit the museums of Mahon and Ciutadella where, as well as getting to know the island’s history, you can see some of the most valuable items that have been uncovered in archaeological excavations. A recommendation: the maqbara, or Arab cemetery in the Museu Can Saura in Ciutadella is very impressive.
• Pick up a programme of cultural activities. Although the offer is not as broad as it is in summer, there are still some events worth seeing in spring. With music festivals, the schedule of the Teatro Principal in Mahon, art workshops that are organised in the low season, amateur theatre productions... If anyone gets bored in Minorca it’s because they want to.
• Do you like photography? Minorca is full of flora and fauna species that are worth the attention of your camera. You can also take the opportunity to take photos of the sunsets - the colours of the sky at this time of year are nothing short of spectacular.
• Take the chance to have your first dip in the sea. The beaches at this time of year are a little less crowded than in summer. If you fancy taking a plunge, bear this in mind: the water is a little chilly, but an incredible crystalline colour. You are sure to find “seaweed” on the sand. Far from being “rubbish”, this plant, called posidonia, is responsible for the turquoise colour of the water, and for protecting the sand banks from sea storms.
These are just a few tips, but Minorca in spring has much more to offer. Do you want to know a secret? Try to make friends with a local. That’s the only real way to discover all of Minorca’s charm.
